La fontana che si trova a piazza Pietro D'Illiria sull'Aventino ha avuto una storia lunga e travagliata. Attualmente si trova addossata ad una nicchia del muro di cinta che compone il Parco Savello, più comunemente noto come giardino degli Aranci. La fontana, in marmo bianco, travertino e frammenti di opus sectile colorati, è stata realizzata nel 1936 su progetto di Antonio Munõz, il quale, in realtà, si limitò ad assemblare elementi diversi. E' composta da due pezzi di reimpiego: una vasca termale romana, probabilmente riferibile ad una struttura che si trovava nella zona, mentre il monumentale mascherone marmoreo fu originariamente scolpito per ornare una fontana costruita nel 1593 nel Campo Vaccino su progetto di Giacomo della Porta. L'antica vasca in granito, decorata di maniglioni a bassorilievo, è collocata al centro di un bacino rettangolare leggermente incassato rispetto al livello stradale. Sopra di essa, raccolto nella valva di una conchiglia, si trova il mascherone dalle ciglia aggrottate e dai folti baffi. Questa scultura vanta una lunga storia: nel 1816 fu smontata dalla fontana del Della Porta e il mascherone fu recuperato e nuovamente utilizzato a partire dal 1827 circa, per decorare una fontana eretta sulla riva destra del Tevere, in corrispondenza del porto Leonino. Con la costruzione dei muraglioni di contenimento del Tevere, intorno al 1890, fu demolita anche questa fontana e la scultura venne ricoverata presso i depositi comunali, dove rimase per alcuni decenni, fino a quando Munõz ne decise l'attuale collocazione.
