Una crociera spettacolare che mi è rimasta nel cuore e che mi auguro di rifare presto: da Mosca a San Pietroburgo, il famoso Anello d'Oro, un viaggio alla scoperta di paesaggi naturali. Quello che più sorprende ed affascina il visitatore di questa storica regione è senza dubbio il Volga, il fiume più lungo d'Europa. Nel nostro viaggio lo incontriamo a nord-est, a Kostroma, quando l'omonimo affluente vi si getta, e a Jaroslavl: entrambe le città si rispecchiano nelle sue calme acque producendo un effetto scenografico. Il fiume Volga è testimone del passato glorioso della Russia, dei suoi popoli e delle sue conquiste. L'antico nome è Atil, Idili, o Itil. Legata al fiume Volga è anche l'Orda d'oro, l'organizzazione politica mongola che, proprio attraverso la navigazione di questo fiume e dei suoi affluenti, riuscì a raggiungere aree di conquista più determinanti, quali la zona di Jaroslavl. La completa russificazione del fiume avvenne poi in seguito con la conquista dei Khanati di Kazan e Astrakan. Questo per secoli portò alla fioritura di numerosi monasteri, chiese, campanili, lungo le sponde del fiume e alla fioritura di una cultura popolare legata al Volga. Il fiume Volga viene infatti considerato non solo la madre di tutti i fiumi, ma anche la madre di tutta la Russia, che simbolicamente abbraccia il popolo russo attraverso i numerosi bracci del suo delta.
