La costruzione dell'edificio venne iniziata l'8 settembre 1491 e terminata nei primi anni del 1500. L'imponente aula interna della chiesa è suddivisa in tre ampie navate, coperte da volte a crociera costolonate la cui decorazione neogotica è realizzata dai fratelli Gauteri intorno al 1849-55. Le due navate laterali sono più basse, mentre la centrale raggiunge i ventuno metri.
