Il ripido e severo Scalone dei Morti, costruito in pietra verde in mezzo alle rocce affioranti, conduce in alto all'ingresso della Chiesa. Allo Scalone dei Morti si giunge dal piano d'ingresso grazie a un ampio e ripido scalone, la cui edificazione pare risalire alla metà del XII secolo. Superati i primi scalini, si lascia a sinistra un pilastro di oltre 18 metri che sostiene il pavimento della sovrastante chiesa. A destra emerge uno spuntone di roccia che si perde nel muro di fronte. Nella nicchia centrale fino al 1936 erano custoditi alcuni scheletri di monaci, da cui il nome di Scalone dei Morti. Questo “atrio” fu un tempo assai sfruttato per la sepoltura di uomini illustri, abati e benemeriti del monastero. Alcune delle tombe che ospitava, erano ornate di marmi, altre intonacate e dipinte: di queste oggi ne rimangono solo cinque.
