L'interno della chiesa, costruito su un più antico edificio corrispondente all'attuale cripta, fu ampliato tra il 1095 e il 1123 grazie alla costruzione del poderoso pilastro che affianca lo Scalone dei Morti e sul quale poggiano le absidi e il presbiterio della chiesa attuale. La seconda fase costruttiva, gotica, è invece caratterizzata dalla presenza di pilastri a fascio. Nel coro è possibile vedere grandi pilastri cilindrici con intrecci di animali fantastici e il finestrone absidale decorato ai lati dalla raffigurazione dell'Annunciazione e dai quattro profeti maggiori: Isaia, Geremia, Ezechiele e Daniele. Interessanti anche le opere pittoriche presenti nella chiesa: nei pressi dell'ingresso, sulla sinistra, è visibile l'affresco con la Deposizione di Cristo nel sepolcro, la Dormitio Virginis e l'Assunzione della Vergine realizzato da Secondo del Bosco da Poirino e aiuti nel 1505, mentre altre opere ad affresco, sempre risalenti al XVI secolo, sono ancora visibili nel Coro Vecchio e sui pilastri delle absidi minori. Ancora nel Coro Vecchio spiccano il Trittico della Vergine col Bambino, San Michele Arcangelo e San Giovanni Vincenzo che presenta il committente, Urbano di Miolans, realizzato da Defendente Ferrari tra il 1503 e il 1522 e l'affresco cinquecentesco della Leggenda della costruzione della Sacra da parte degli angeli. Al 1633 risale infine la tela raffigurante San Michele Arcangelo di Antonio Maria Viani.
