Nella confusione di una giornata di sole in Corso Vittorio Emanuele a Milano, nessuno faceva caso a questo novello e stravagante Napoleone. Apostrofava la gente, la chiamava, quasi a dire: " Ma come avete qui l'imperatore dei francesi e non vi fermate nemmeno per un saluto?". Mi sono fermata io, e gli ho fatto notare che, probabilmente la gente non ci fa caso, per via della sua divisa che non è propriamente quella della Grande Armata e meno che meno quella dell'empereur. E lui, piantandomi due begli occhi azzuri in faccia, mi ha risposto: "L'ho comprata in un posto dove vendono costumi per Carnevale, mi hanno assicurato che era del periodo napoleonico, e comunque autentico o non autentico, neanche più a Milano la gente ha qualche spicciolo da lasciare. "Dai, non ti scoraggiare - gli ho detto - vedrai che qualcuno arriva". E manco fossi stata profeta, dopo cinque minuti, tornando dal bar con un caffé caldo per lui, l'ho visto attorniato da un bel po' di ragazzini...e allora facendo quello che mai mi sarei sognata di fare, ho avuto il coraggio di dire: "Bravi! Bravi, non dimenticate un soldino per Napoleone, prima di andar via" Lui, dal suo piedistallo mi ha sorriso e, credetemi, in quel momento, ho capito ed apprezzato ancora di più il valore di un sorriso.
