Il Battistero di San Giovanni è una delle più antiche chiese di Firenze, posto di fronte alla Cattedrale della città, la chiesa di Santa Maria del Fiore. A pianta ottagonale, interamente rivestito di lastre di marmo bianco e verde di Prato, il Battistero è coperto da una cupola ad otto spicchi poggiante sulle pareti perimetrali, mascherata all'esterno dall'elevazione delle pareti sopra l'arcata del secondo livello e da un tetto a piramide schiacciata. Questa struttura così affascinante, in cui si fondono fede, storia e arte, ha creato non pochi problemi per la sua datazione. I fiorentini del Medioevo credevano che il Battistero fosse un edificio antico, risalente al periodo romano della città; un tempio pagano trasformato in chiesa. In effetti gran parte del rivestimento marmoreo del Battistero, così come i numerosi frammenti ed iscrizioni antiche e le grandi colonne che sorreggono la trabeazione sopra le porte all'interno, provengono dalle rovine della 'Florentia' romana, forse da qualche edificio pagano. Il monumento che vediamo oggi è il frutto dell'ampliamento di un primitivo Battistero, risalente al IV-V secolo. Nel XIII secolo si dà il via anche alla decorazione musiva interna, ricoprendo la scarsella e l'intera cupola, con gli interventi di Jacopo Torriti e, forse, della nuova scuola pittorica fiorentina: Cimabue e Coppo di Marcovaldo. Entrando nell'edificio, la prima cosa che cattura l'attenzione è il prezioso mosaico della cupola, una delle più grandi al mondo per l'epoca ad esser decorata con questa tecnica. I mosaici sono dominati dall'enorme figura di Cristo giudice con scene del giudizio universale che occupano tre degli otto spicchi della cupola. Nei sovrapposti registri orizzontali degli altri cinque spicchi, sono raffigurate le storie di San Giovanni Battista, patrono di Firenze, di Cristo, di Giuseppe e della Genesi. Al centro, nel registro più in alto, trovano posto le gerarchie angeliche. Di patronato della ricca Arte di Calimala, il Battistero venne impreziosito anche da tre bellissime porte bronzee. La più antica è la Porta Sud realizzata tra il 1330 e il 1336 dallo scultore Andrea Pisano. Essa mostra nei venti scomparti superiori gli episodi della vita del Battista e nei restanti otto, le Virtù cristiane. La Porta Nord, fu la seconda ad essere realizzata. Sostanzialmente impostata come la prima, rappresenta nelle venti formelle superiori scene del Nuovo Testamento e nelle otto formelle inferiori gli Evangelisti e i quattro Padri della Chiesa. Infine la porta est, detta da Michelangelo la Porta del Paradiso, il capolavoro oramai pienamente rinascimentale del Ghiberti e dei suoi aiuti, tra cui Luca della Robbia. Ghiberti e la sua bottega, ottennero senza concorso la commissione della porta che venne realizzata in un formato diverso dalle altre due, in dieci grandi formelle. Da ricordare che dentro il Battistero originariamente trovavano collocazione anche altre grandiose opere d'arte, come la Maddalena di Donatello o l'Altare d'argento, oggi visibili al Museo dell'Opera del Duomo per ragioni conservative. #BlackAndWhite
