La fontaine Saint-Michel si trova all'incrocio tra boulevard Saint-Michel e piazza Saint-André-des-Arts, nel VI arrondissement di Parigi. Occupa tutta la facciata di un edificio affacciato sul pont Saint-Michel e fu inaugurata nel 1860, come parte del "risanamento" cittadino del barone Haussmann, che qui si trovò di fronte al problema di sistemare la prospettiva dal ponte, al posto di una parete poco estetica. La fontana è alta 26 metri e larga 15. Il progetto di Gabriele Davioud, consisteva in quattro livelli orizzontali, simili a un arco trionfale , con quattro colonne corinzie su alti zoccoli che incorniciano la nicchia centrale. La cornice principale è sormontata da un elemento di design del Rinascimento francese , una tavoletta inscritta in una grande cornice architettonica. Poiché il sito rivisto era appena fuori dall'asse del ponte, Davioud ha creato un compromesso visivo in una serie di bacini curvi poco profondi attraverso i quali l'acqua che fuoriesce dalla roccia sotto il corpo supino dell'avversario di San Michele si rovescia. Davioud mise una statua femminile di Pace nella nicchia centrale. Il piano del 1858 prevedeva la sostituzione della pace con una statua di Napoleone Bonaparte . Ciò provocò la furiosa opposizione degli oppositori di Luigi-Napoleone, così nel 1858 Davioud propose che la figura centrale fosse l' Arcangelo Michele che lottava con il diavolo. Nel settembre 1870, dopo l'abdicazione dell'imperatore Luigi Napoleone,durante la guerra franco-tedesca, la fontana, insieme ad altri simboli di Luigi Napoleone, fu apparentemente attaccata e danneggiata dalla folla durante la rivolta e la soppressione della Comune di Parigi del 1871 .
