Le Colonne di San Lorenzo sono uno dei rari reperti della Milano Imperiale che sono rimasti intatti fino ad oggi e che possiamo ammirare da vicino. Non va dimenticato, infatti, che la città a cavallo tra il IV e V secolo dopo Cristo era la capitale dell'Impero Romano d'Occidente. L'antica pianta di Milano era quella tipica degli accampamenti militari romani con due arterie principali (cardo e decumano) che si congiungevano nel centro cittadino, il Foro, corrispondente all'attuale piazza S. Sepolcro. Fu durante questo periodo che Milano, l'antica Mediolanum, si arricchì di palazzo imperiale, terme, del circo, delle mura massimianee e di un mausoleo imperiale. Fu qui che nel 313 l'imperatore Costantino promulgò l'editto che consentiva libertà a tutti i culti tra cui il culto cristiano. Le storiche figure del Vescovo Ambrogio e dell'Imperatore Teodosio I fecero infine di Milano il centro più importante della Chiesa d'Occidente. Passando lungo le sedici colonne marmoree di San Lorenzo sormontate da capitelli corinzi si colgono le tracce di romanità, di un passato che emerge attraverso i reperti visibili in città. Il colonnato fu eretto in epoca tardoantica (probabilmente nel V secolo d.C.) come prospetto scenografico dell'atrio antistante la chiesa, ma è costituito da colonne, basi, capitelli e frammenti di architrave assai più antichi, recuperati da un edificio pubblico a noi ignoto risalente alla seconda metà del II secolo d.c. I capitelli sono differenti tra loro per stile e dimensioni poiché provengono da più edifici differenti. A quelli più bassi venne aggiunto, in laterizio, uno spessore in grado di portarli a livello degli altri più alti. Commenti, consigli e critiche sempre super graditi. Grazie.
