Curiosità: I caratteristici ciuffetti di peli sopra le orecchie dello scoiattolo rosso (o scoiattolo comune europeo) si ritiene che abbiano?la funzione di migliorare l'udito già molto sviluppato di questo simpatico roditore, conferendogli anche un aspetto sbarazzino. Questi ciuffi auricolari, assenti nelle altre specie di scoiattoli, crescono maggiormente in inverno e si pensa che servano a creare una sorta di barriera naturale, indirizzando i suoni verso?il padiglione uditivo dell'animale. In fondo anche noi uomini per captare?meglio un suono?appoggiamo spesso in modo istintivo?la?mano, aperta a cucchiaio,?al bordo all'orecchio, per cercare di convogliare più onde sonore possibili all'interno dell'apparato uditivo.
