La chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione, è un luogo di culto cattolico di Roma, nel rione Campitelli, che si affaccia sulla piazza omonima, vicino al Foro Romano e ai piedi della rupe Tarpea. A proposito delle origini di questa chiesa e del suo nome, così riferisce l'Armellini: « Su quella strada corrispondente all'antico vico iugario v'erano i granari dei Mattei patrizi romani. Nel portico di quelli v'era un'immagine della s. Vergine[1], alla quale raccomandandosi una pia madre il cui figlio innocente era stato carcerato e condannato a morte per malefizi, la Vergine gli disse, consolandola, che il figlio non sarebbe morto, ma miracolosamente salvo dalle forche. Dopo ciò i fedeli offrivano spesso doni a quest'immagine e ne fu data la cura alla confraternita di S. Maria in Portico. Presso quei granari v'era pure un piccolo ospedale, vicino al quale fu poi fabbricata la chiesa alla Vergine della Consolazione. Questi fatti accaddero poco prima del 1460 » (Armellini, op. cit., pag. 536.) La chiesa dunque, costruita nella seconda metà del XV secolo e consacrata il 3 novembre 1470, fu chiamata della consolazione per consolare i condannati a morte, le cui sentenze venivano eseguite fino al 1550 nella vicina Rupe Tarpea. Fu poi ricostruita negli anni 1583-1606 su progetto di Martino Longhi il vecchio, e la facciata terminata solo nel 1827 ad opera dell'architetto Pasquale Belli. Era una chiesa ricca, governata da una "Compagnia di Gentiluomini" appartenenti alle famiglie storiche del patiziato romano - Frangipane, Colonna, Boccamazza, Savelli, Santacroce, Mattei. La Compagnia era nata nel 1505 dall'unione di tre confraternite e ospedali - di Santa Maria della Consolazione, di Santa Maria delle Grazie, e di Santa Maria in Portico - ed era a suo modo laica: l'amministrazione era infatti saldamente in mano ai gentiluomini, e la compagnia non dipendeva da alcun ordine religioso - anzi stipendiava 20 sacerdoti per le messe quotidiane - ed era dedicata espressamente al soccorso (dotava zitelle, convitava poveri) e alla gestione dell'ospedale annesso. Vi aderirono nel tempo anche alcune corporazioni di mestiere: vignaioli, pescivendoli, osti, ottenendo la concessione di alcune cappelle e l'accesso all'ospedale.
