In Portogallo è difficile non vederli, dovunque ci si trovi: gli azulejos rallegrano le più famose città. La parola deriva dall'arabo e indica una piccola pietra liscia e levigata che i musulmani usavano nel medioevo. Il modo come gli arabi impiegavano gli azulejos per decorare piacque molto ai sovrani portoghesi e questo tipo di decorazione finì per svolgere un ruolo importante nell'architettura a partire dal XV° secolo.
