I Sassi di Matera sono uno straordinario esempio, unico nel suo genere, di città scavata nella roccia. Nel 1993 sono stati dichiarati Patrimonio mondiale dell'umanità UNESCO. Composti dal Sasso Caveoso, dal Sasso Barisano e dal Rione Civita, costituiscono il centro storico di Matera. I Sassi si sviluppano in una fittissima trama urbana lungo le ripide pareti del canyon in cui scorre il torrente Gravina. Sono caratterizzati da stradine tortuose, scalette e discese che si diramano tra case scavate nella roccia, grotte e chiese rupestri, tra le quali la Chiesa Madonna dell'Idris e la Chiesa San Giovanni in Monterrone. I Sassi hanno accolto antichi luoghi di culto, rifugi di comunità religiose e dimore per la popolazione locale. In poco più di quarant'anni, il modo di vedere i Sassi è radicalmente cambiato. Negli anni '50 e '60 del XX secolo erano considerati “vergogna nazionale” perché, al tempo del decollo industriale, i contrasti del mondo contadino meridionale parevano stridenti. Successivamente maturò il processo di rivalutazione di questo luogo straordinario. Consigliata la visione in HD.
