La Fontana del Moro di Gianlorenzo Bernini è la prima delle tre fontane che ornano piazza Navona, alimentate dall'Acqua Vergine. Anche questa è stata eseguita sottto il pontificato di InnocenzoX, come la fontana dei Fiumi Il gruppo del Moro, è stato scolpito nel 1654 da Giovanni Antonio Mari, su bozzetto di Bernini. Olimpia Maidalchini aveva commissionato l'opera al Bernini per completare la vasca polilobata realizzata nel 1575-76 da Giacomo Della Porta, su volere di papa Gregorio XIII. Anche in questo caso Bernini trasforma il progetto precedente di Giacomo Della Porta che corrispondeva sempre al suo tipo base: gradini, vasca, catini, balaustra, parte principale con statue. Si trattava di una struttura monumentale, architettonica, molto pronunciata. Bernini mantiene la parte centrale del progetto di Giacomo, ma la vasca diventa una piscina molto bassa, a livello del suolo, eliminando la gradinata e la balaustrata. Bernini inventa un nuovo gruppo centrale al posto di quello progettato da Giacomo Della Porta. Pone al centro un personaggio marino-umano,chiamato poi "il moro", per la sua fisionomia particolare. A differenza dei tritoni tradizionali, in genere rappresentati con sembianze mostruose, la statua del Bernini rappresenta un uomo, un gigante dalle forme possenti che strangola un pesce tenendolo tra le gambe. Dalla bocca del pesce, come conseguenza dello strangolamento, esce un getto d'acqua. Nelle sue fontane Bernini studia attentamente l'uscita dell'acqua per darle sempre una giustificazione logica o fantastica, ma anche un carattere spettacolare. Nella Fontana del Moro l'acqua si trasforma in una lama di luce che esce dalla bocca del pesce. Avviene una metamorfosi: acqua -luce. La metamorfosi rappresenta un principio essenziale, tipico dell'arte del Bernini. La statua del gigante è una figura dinamica, concepita con lo scopo di dilettare il pubblico, ma è un po' monumentale, non possiede quella ricchezza di significati di altre sue statue. La piscina che amplia la vasca è stata realizzata da Bernini su disegno di Borromini. I pezzi originali attualmente sono stati trasferiti nel giardino del Lago di Villa Borghese, al loro posto si trovano le copie eseguite da Luigi Amici nel 1874.
