La fama e il prestigio delle Terme di Tivoli risiede nelle parole e nelle lodi di grandi personaggi del passato: scrittori come Plinio Secondo il Vecchio e Virgilio le menzionavano nelle loro opere, imperatori come Nerone e Adriano ne esaltavano le qualità terapeutiche, tanto da impegnarsi per avere le benefiche acque sulfuree sempre a disposizione nelle loro dimore. Cesare Augusto commissionò addirittura la costruzione di un impianto termale imperiale, le Terme di Agrippa, oggi conosciute col nome di Terme di Roma. Anche nel Rinascimento le terme furono ampiamente sfruttate ed apprezzate, in particolare con il governo del Cardinale Ippolito d'Este, che proprio per curare la sua salute malferma, fu promotore della costruzione dei Bagni Vecchi all'interno della maestosa Villa d'Este. Ancora oggi tali sorgenti carbonico sulfuree, scaturite dai due laghi Regina e Colonnelle, conservano il nome che avevano nell'antichità, Acque Albule, derivato dal colore biancastro, dovuto all'emulsione gassosa che si forma in superficie, quando si liberano anidride carbonica e idrogeno solforato. Rappresentano una delle principali attrazioni di Tivoli e accolgono sempre maggiori afflussi di turisti, amanti delle terme, da tutta Europa, soprattutto, da quando, nel 2000, il gruppo alberghiero Sirio Hotel ha acquisito una partecipazione presso la società Acque Albule e ha dato il via a un progetto di sviluppo per adeguare l'intero complesso e renderlo uno dei centri termali europei più all'avanguardia. L'attuale offerta delle terme di Tivoli comprende sia terapie mediche, sia trattamenti estetici, realizzati in base a un'attenta ricerca del relax e del benessere psico-fisico.
