Eretto su una chiesa pre_romana e' uno dei monumenti piu' importanti.citato per la prima volta intorno al x secolo.Nel 1110,papa Pasquale I decreto' che il monastero fosse direttamente soggetto alla Santa Sede e concesse ai monaci il diritto di eleggere autonomamente il proprio abate sciogliendo,di fatto,il vincolo tra il monastero e il vescovo della citta'.Abbandonato dai monaci dopo la caduta degli Svevi,nel 1266 fu affidato ad un gruppo di monache cistercensi in fuga dalla Grecia guidate da Dameta Paleologo,le quali esercitarono il proprio potere e privilegi(indossando la mitra ed il pastorale come i vescovi) su parte del clero e sulla popolazione di Castellana Grotte,in maniera quasi feudale sino al 1809,quando quei privilegi furono aboliti da Gioacchino Murat.Oggi parte del monastero e' sede del museo civico.
