Questo imponente complesso architettonico è stato eretto nel 1960 in commemorazione del 500° anniversario della morte di Henrique il Navigatore. Il monumento è dedicato alle scoperte marittime ed alle imprese di navigazione che tanta fama hanno dato al Portogallo.
