Questa fortezza della Val d'Aosta,gia' attiva fin dal Medio Evo,visse il suo momento di gloria nell'anno 1800,quando si erse a baluardo contro le armate francesi che avevano passato il Gran S. Bernardo come un fiume in piena. Per ben 15 lunghi giorni resistette all'assedio,con grandi atti di eroismo dei suoi occupanti austro-piemontesi,contro il piu' potente esercito d'Europa. Dopo la resa,avvenuta il 1° giugno,Napoleone rase al suolo il castello ma concesse ai superstiti l'onore delle armi. Dovettero passare trent'anni prima che Carlo Felice di Savoia desse ordine di ricostruire la fortezza,realizzando il complesso di 283 stanze e 176 locali di servizio visibile e visitabile oggi.
