La Valle d'Itria deve il suo nome probabilmente per la presenza nella zona del culto della Madonna Odegitria, della quale fu ritrovata in una grotta un'antica raffigurazione. La Valle si estende in quella parte dell'altopiano della Murgia, detto: Murgia dei Trulli Cisternino, che si potrebbe definire la “città bianca” (nomignolo che invece caratterizza la vicina Ostuni), è un borgo che sorge su uno dei picchi più elevati delle Murge. Per la sua particolare posizione essa domina la Valle d'Itria costituendo una balconata con i suoi vari punti di belvedere dai quali poter ammirare la distesa di trulli e vegetazione da cui è composta la Valle. Uno dei punti di osservazione privilegiati è la Villa Comunale, dalla quale nei giorni di minore foschia si può anche raggiungere con lo sguardo le città di Locorotondo e Martina Franca. È possibile entrare nel cuore di Cisternino attraverso delle antiche porte come la Porta Grande (situata a ovest) e la Porta Piccola (a est). Il borgo è caratterizzato da piccole stradine lastricate ed edifici di calce bianca, con balconi fioriti e un'atmosfera fiabesca. Commenti, critiche e consigli sempre super graditi. Grazie.
