Ottobre 2016, alle 8,30 circa in piazza del Duomo, un festoso e rumoroso gruppo di cinesi cattolici in gita, ha attirato la mia attenzione e ammutolito il piccione che guarda la scena. Alcuni dati sui cattolici cinesi:Secondo le fonti ufficiali, la Chiesa cattolica in Cina è formata da circa 4 milioni di fedeli. Il dato riguarda gli aderenti all'«Associazione patriottica cattolica cinese», la sola Chiesa cattolica riconosciuta dal governo. Il governo cinese chiede infatti ai cattolici di non riconoscere l'autorità del Papa e di affermare il primato dello Stato sulla propria aderenza confessionale. Eppure la Chiesa cattolica fedele al papa esiste. Secondo la «Laogai Research Foundation» ed altre organizzazioni estere, o non ufficiali («Human Rights Watch», «Asia Watch Committee»), i fedeli della chiesa cattolica detta sotterranea (perché ufficialmente bandita) raggiungerebbero la cifra di 16 milioni[1]. Esistono quindi due forme di cattolicesimo in Cina: 1. L'«Associazione patriottica cattolica cinese», che non ammette ufficialmente il primato del Papa ed è riconosciuta dal governo; 2. La Chiesa che è in comunione con Roma. Per la legge cinese questa chiesa non esiste; è quindi costretta ad operare in totale clandestinità. Lo Stato considera coloro che sono rimasti fedeli al papa, sia presbiteri che laici, “sovversivi”. La Costituzione (art. 36) afferma che "le organizzazioni religiose e le attività religiose non possono essere soggette ad alcun controllo esterno"[2]. La legge ordinaria («Documento n° 19» vedi infra) vieta l'attività religiosa al di fuori dell'associazione patriottica poiché "sovverte il potere dello Stato". Per i colpevoli sono previste severe condanne penali[3]. Sempre secondo la «Laogai Research Foundation», molti degli aderenti all'Associazione patriottica si riconoscono clandestinamente con la Chiesa rimasta fedele al Papa[4]. Quest'ultima, nonostante sia costretta ad operare nella clandestinità, è quella con la maggiore crescita di fedeli[5], infatti ci sarebbero 150 mila conversioni al cattolicesimo ogni anno.
