La fontana della Barcaccia, collocata al centro di piazza di Spagna, fu realizzata tra il 1626 e il 1629 per volontà di papa Urbano VIII Barberini. ll pontefice realizzò un progetto risalente al 1570 che prevedeva di ornare con fontane pubbliche le piazze più importanti della città attraversate dal ristrutturato Acquedotto Vergine. La fontana fu commissionata a Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), architetto dell'Acqua Vergine dal 1623 e padre del più celebre Gian Lorenzo (1598-1680) con il quale non è da escludere vi sia stata una collaborazione. Pietro Bernini progettò una fontana assolutamente nuova rispetto alle opere realizzate a Roma alla fine del XVI secolo, ideando un'opera più scultorea che architettonica. Tra le diverse interpretazioni offerte, riguardo il soggetto rappresentato, (la barca), spiccano due antiche e accreditate tradizioni popolari. Queste spiegano come la particolare forma della “fontana della Barcaccia” deriverebbe dalla presenza nella piazza di una barca in secca giunta lì a causa della piena del Tevere del 1598. Un'altra ipotesi è che in loco vi fosse una naumachia (con questo termine, letteralmente “combattimento navale”, si indicava nell'antica Roma sia uno spettacolo che riproduceva una battaglia navale. Infine, in base alla fisionomia stessa della “fontana della Barcaccia”, che presenta fiancate basse e larghe, non è da escludere la teoria che, nel mondo romano, la barcaccia fosse semplicemente un'imbarcazione, che risaliva la corrente del Tevere piena di botti di vino. La singolare vasca a forma di imbarcazione raccoglie l'acqua che fuoriesce da due grandi soli - collocati internamente allo scafo a prua e a poppa - e quella che zampilla da un piccolo catino centrale. L'acqua straripante dai fianchi della barca, aperti in modo da offrire l'impressione che stia affondando, viene raccolta da un bacino sottostante nel quale confluiscono anche i getti provenienti da bocche di finte cannoniere poste all'esterno della prua e della poppa, ai lati dei grandi stemmi papali caratterizzati dalle api, simbolo della famiglia Barberini. La fontana è stata sottoposta nel tempo a vari interventi conservativi resisi necessari anche dalla sua collocazione al centro di una delle piazze più frequentate della città.
