Il Doronico austriaco (Doronicum austriacum Jacq.) appartiene alla famiglia delle Asteraceae ed è diffuso, in Italia, in tutto il nord del Paese sino in Toscana, ma, particolarmente, sulle Alpi Orientali, tra i 500 ed i 1.900 m. slm. L'etimologia è incerta per il nome del genere. Per alcuni di origine greca come combinazione di "doron" e "nike" ossia "dono e vittoria", per altri di origine araba dal vocabolo "dourondj", termine valido per le piante del genere in tutti i paesi dell'Oriente. Il nome specifico deriva dalla relativa abbondanza della specie nel settore orientale delle Alpi. Tutte le specie del genere Doronicum posseggono principi medicinali tuttora ritenuti validi e furono, in passato, coltivati negli orti delle erbe officinali. Curiosità: molte credenze aleggiano su tutte le specie di Doronicum, le quali, secondo la tradizione mediterranea, potevano infondere forza, vitalità e donare sicura vittoria sia in guerra che nella caccia.
