Piazza degli Eroi è una delle più importanti piazze di Budapest ricca di elementi politici e storici. Si trova alla fine di Andrássy út, famoso viale ungherese, diventato Patrimonio dell'Unesco e dedicato al conte Gyula Andràssy che parteggiò per il movimento nazionale magiaro e condannato a morte dall'Austria nel 1851. Graziato poi nel 1857 tornò in patria e fu eletto alla dieta (1869). Collaborò con l'Imperatrice Elisabetta, assumendo la parte principale nelle trattative che condussero al Compromesso austroungarico che, nel 1867 incoronò Francesco Giuseppe re d'Ungheria. Il 16 giugno 1989 una folla di 250,000 persone si raccolse nella piazza per i nuovi funerali di Imre Nagy, che era stato giustiziato nel giugno 1958.
