Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere con i suoi spazi aperti e l'architettura che la circonda è uno dei punti di incontro preferiti da romani e turisti di tutto il mondo. Al centro della piazza è presente una fontana a vasca ottagonale realizzata da Carlo Fontana nel 1692 e intorno ad essa chiudono il panorama la Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, considerata da molti la prima chiesa di Roma aperta ufficialmente al culto, la settecentesca casa dei Canonici e il palazzo San Callisto. La data di esecuzione della fontana è però messa in dubbio da molti che la considerano una tra le più antiche fontane di Roma ancora esistenti, facendo risalire l'anno di costruzione tra il 772 e il 795, sotto il pontificato di papa Adriano I. I veri lavori, però, sarebbero avvenuti nell'VIII secolo con alimentazione ricevuta dai resti dell'acquedotto Alsietino. L'intervento da parte del Bramante, risalirebbe al periodo compreso tra il 1486 e il 1501. Qui furono aggiunti alcuni ornamenti. Si tratta di teste di lupo dalle cui fauci usciva l'acqua che finiva poi nella vasca. L'altro intervento ad opera dell'architetto Giovanni Fontana, fu realizzato nel XVI secolo. Quest'opera fu effettuata in modo molto radicale da trasformare la precedente in quella attuale di piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere.
