Questa è la statua di Umberto Saba a Trieste, nell'atto di recarsi abitualmente come tutti i giorni alla sua libreria. Qualche cenno biografico del grande poeta:Nacque nel 1883 a Trieste, che allora faceva ancora parte dell'impero asburgico, con il cognome Poli; ma poiché il padre abbandonò la madre prima della sua nascita, si firmerà con lo pseudonimo Saba, in omaggio alla madre ebrea Rachel Coen (la parola, in ebraico significa pane) e all'amata balia slovena, Peppa Sabaz. Frequentò, senza diplomarsi, il ginnasio e l'Accademia di commercio, quindi lavorò in un magazzino; per qualche tempo s'imbarcò anche come mozzo. Fin da giovane lesse da autodidatta poeti come Petrarca e Leopardi. Nel 1903 si trasferì a Pisa e poi a Firenze, compiendo una precisa scelta anche culturale in favore dell'Italia. Chiese dunque la cittadinanza italiana. Allo stesso anno risalgono le sue prime poesie (Il mio primo libro di poesia), poi ripubblicate nel 1911 con il tutolo di Poesie. Compì il servizio militare a Salerno e a Firenze, nel 1908; ne sono testimonianza i Versi militari di quell'anno. Al ritorno sposò (con rito ebraico) Carolina Wolfer (la Lina del Canzoniere), che sarà la donna della sua vita; nel 1909 nacque la figlia Linuccia. A Firenze, Saba conobbe gli intellettuali della Voce (Papini, Prezzolini): nel 1912 pubblicò con le edizioni della rivista fiorentina le poesie Coi miei occhi (titolo poi mutato in Trieste, divenuta italiana, e vi aprì una libreria antiquaria, che poi fece dirigere da un amico. Attraverso Bobi Bazlen, venne a contatto con alcuni scrittori italiani contemporanei, fra cui il giovane Montale. Nel 1921 sistemò e ordinò nella prima edizione del Canzoniere le raccolte pubblicate fino ad allora. Uscirono poi nel 1923 Preludio e canzonette, quindi Figure e canti nel 1926, Preludio e fughe nel 1928, Parole nel 1934. Nel numero e la sua fama poté così consolidarsi e allargarsi. Intanto, a causa di frequenti disturbi nervosi, iniziò una terapia presso il noto psicoanalista Edoardo Weiss, affrontando i traumi legati alla sua infanzia: l'abbandono e l'assenza del padre, il difficile rapporto con la madre severa, l'amore per la balia Peppa. Da tale esperienza nacquero le poesie raccolte in Il piccolo Berto, del 1931. Nel 1938, alla promulgazione delle leggi razziali, Saba dovette lasciare Trieste. Si rifugiò prima a Parigi, poi a Roma e negli ultimi anni di guerra a Firenze, dove cambiò spesso abitazione, aiutato da alcuni amici, fra cui Montale. Nel 1945 pubblicò con Einaudi la seconda edizione del Canzoniere, che includeva le altre raccolte via via uscite. Ritornò quindi a Trieste e al suo lavoro di libraio; pubblicò ancora libri di poesia (Mediterranee, 1946), favolette e aforismi (Scorciatoie e raccontini, 1946), raccolte di articoli (Ricordi-Racconti, 1956). Morì nel 1957. Postumo, nel 1975, è uscito un romanzo incompiuto, Ernesto, che narra una lontana esperienza omosessuale dell'autore. Critiche e commenti sempre super graditi. Grazie.
