Dichiarata “monumento nazionale” nel 1874, l'Abbazia di Fossanova costituisce il più antico esempio d'arte gotico-cistercense in Italia e, assieme all'Abbazia di Casamari (presso Veroli), una delle sue più alte espressioni. Il complesso nacque alla fine del XII secolo dalla trasformazione di un preesistente monastero benedettino, forse risalente al VI secolo, di cui rimane una flebile traccia al disopra del rosone della chiesa. L'antico cenobio, sorto su i resti di una villa romana, vene infatti ceduto nel 1134 da Papa Innocenzo II ad alcuni monaci borgognoni, guidati da San Bernardo di Chiaravalle, i quali seguivano la rigida regola scaturita dalla riforma di Citeaux (1098) improntata sull'originaria ortodossia benedettina. I cistercensi provvidero innanzitutto a risanare l'area paludosa, tramite l'escavazione di un “nuovo fosso” - da cui derivò il toponimo “Fossanova” - allo scopo di regolare il livello delle acque dell'Amaseno. L'opera di costruzione della chiesa, in pietra locale, fu così iniziata soltanto nel 1187 ed il 10 giugno 1208 Innocenzo III ne consacrò l'altare maggiore. La chiesa, dedicata alla Vergine Maria e al martire Santo Stefano, riflette perfettamente la severità della regola cistercense, fondata sul voto, l'isolamento e l'Opus Dei: un'architettura solenne, di austera eleganza, spoglia e priva di ornamenti pittorici, in un'arcana atmosfera di essenzialità e di profonda spiritualità. A pianta latina e caratterizzato fortemente dall'ogiva, il tempio si concede del resto, quali unici elementi “sfarzosi”, l'ampio e magnifico rosone e lo splendido mosaico della lunetta del portale; lo stesso campanile, visibile sin da lontano, è di grande bellezza.
