Alla nascita di Gesù, i Magi venuti dall'Oriente, seguendo la stella, sostano a Gerusalemme da Erode il Grande, chiedendo dove trovare il futuro re dei Giudei. Erode, temendo che il bambino cercato dai Magi possa essere una futura minaccia al suo trono, cerca di ucciderlo e poiché non conosce la data precisa della sua nascita, né chi sia questo bambino, ordina di uccidere tutti i bambini della zona sotto i due anni, nella speranza di uccidere il potenziale Re dei Giudei. In sogno un Angelo appare a Giuseppe, lo avverte del pericolo e gli ordina di portare Gesù e Maria in Egitto. Trovano rifugio, in quello che, oggi è il quartiere copto, collocato in un'area della città, chiamata Cairo Vecchio, dove sorgono gli edifici più antichi collegabili ai primi insediamenti urbani. Tutta la zona è circondata dalle possenti mura del primo nucleo romano chiamato forte di Babilonia. Lontani dal caos del Cairo, entrando al Cairo copto, si intuisce subito che si sta entrando in un alto mondo, un luogo dove il Cristianesimo è declinato in modo assolutamente diverso rispetto a quello a cui siamo abituati in Europa. Si incontra una spiritualità vissuta in maniera molto diversa, con un risalto esteriore che a noi può risultare eccessivo, eppure si respira tra i fedeli un senso della fede molto forte, l'idea della religione come legame indissolubile di una comunità. Si entra nel quartiere scendendo una scala sovrastata da una grande Madonna con il Bambino Gesù al neon; da quel punto il percorso si snoda attraverso una serie di piccole stradine dove le chiese si alternano alle abitazioni delle gente comune. A un primo sguardo si scontrano il sacro, rappresentato dal passeggiare lento e compito di preti e suore, con il profano, simboleggiato dai turisti in calzoncini e dalle bancarelle di libri e oggetti religiosi. Perdendosi tra i cunicoli, passando attraverso una stradina la cui porta d'entrata obbliga a doversi abbassare si arriva, senza rendersene conto in quanto non si distingue dall'ingresso delle case comuni, alla chiesa di San Giorgio. Si tratta di uno dei luoghi più sacri per la comunità copta e per tutta la cristianità del mondo, dato che al suo interno si trova la cripta dove, secondo la tradizione, si sarebbe rifugiata la Sacra Famiglia durante la sua fuga in Egitto. Purtroppo la cripta non è accessibile, bisogna accontentarsi delle foto che una ragazza li accanto tenta, in maniera insistente, di venderti. Questa foto, sono riuscita a scattarla dopo mille stratagemmi, e dall'alto della Cappella, perché come detto prima, l'accesso alla cripta è consentito solo alle suore che la custodiscono e ai religiosi per le liturgie festive.
