La Nigritella alpina appartiene alla famiglia delle Orchidaceae ed il suo nome scientifico è duplice in quanto da alcuni botanici viene identificato come Nigritella nigra subsp. rhellicani e da altri come Gymademia rhellicani. Il nome generico (Gymnadenia) deriva da due parole greche: gymnos (= nudo) è adèn (= ghiandola) e deriva dal fatto che i retinacoli (le estremità nettarifere con ghiandole vischiose per far aderire il polline agli insetti pronubi) non sono racchiusi nelle borsicole ma sono praticamente “nude”. Il nome specifico sta ad indicare il colore dei fiori che va dal porpora al rosso-nerastro. Tipico è il profumo di vaniglia emanato dai fiori, fatto che attira un gran numero di insetti. Il suo areale si estende dalla Francia ai Balcani. In Italia è presente sulle Alpi e sull'Appennino settentrionale (dove comunque è rarissima). Cresce nelle praterie alpine e subalpine, da 1.000 a 2.800 m di altitudine. Scatto effettuato all'inizio della Vale dei Forni (Alta Valfurva), a circa 2.300 metri di quota, nel Luglio del 2016.
