La Cappella dei Banchieri e dei Mercanti, nel centro storico di Torino, è il frutto del lavoro di pittori, ebanisti, doratori, scultori, che le hanno donato una straordinaria ricchezza decorativa con grandi e bellissime tele, ricche cornici, statue, affreschi, oltre all'altare pregiato in marmi policromi, all'organo e ai banchi lignei. La Pia Congregazione dei Banchieri Negozianti e Mercanti fu fondata a Torino nel 1663 dopo l'arrivo in città di numerose famiglie di mercanti straniere, gli Audifredi, commercianti in seta, i Barbaroux, i Barel di Lione, i Borbonese, i Dupré, i Martin, i Laurent, i Rasini, oltre ai Calandra, provenienti da Acceglio, cappellari del sovrano, i drappieri di Chieri Buschetti, i Gamba di Moncalieri, speziali e banchieri, i Gargano di Chieri, i setaioli, banchieri e mercanti Gianotti e Sclopis di Giaveno. Lo scopo della Congregazione era quello di sostenere i confratelli in disgrazia, con la Santa Messa aperta a tutti nei giorni festivi e l'elargizione di somme di denaro a favore di persone o Istituti religiosi bisognosi. All'inizio i confratelli usavano la cappella posta all'interno del collegio gesuitico di Torino, ma dopo trent'anni il rettore dei Gesuiti, padre Agostino Provana, donò loro una cappella eretta a spese dell'ordine, all'interno del complesso dei Santi Martiri, sull'attuale via Garibaldi, la cui prima pietra era stata posta nel 1577, basata su un progetto di Pellegrino Tibaldi, uomo di fiducia di San Carlo Borromeo.La Cappella era consacrata oltre che alla Madonna Santissima della Fede, anche alla Festa dell'Epifania, molto sentita dai Savoia e dai Torinesi. Agostino Provana aveva incaricato della decorazione della volta il pittore milanese Stefano Maria Legnani detto Legnanino che, nel 1695, concluse il lavoro, con anche l'aiuto dei fratelli Grandi di Milano, che si occuparono dell'impianto architettonico dipinto su cui Legnani inseriva le sue figure. Al momento dell'inaugurazione alle pareti erano già presenti tre quadri degli iniziali 14 commissionati e gli ultimi furono collocati nella cappella solo nel 1712. La Cappella è un unico spazio rettangolare di venti metri per dieci, con la volta lunettata ornata dai bellissimi affreschi di Stefano Maria Legnani, in quegli anni impegnato anche nella decorazione di Palazzo Carignano e del Palazzo Provana. Le pareti della Cappella sono ritmicamente spartite da vari quadri inseriti in poderose cornici, mentre l'aula ha un aspetto riservato e sobrio nel suo insieme. Nel 1769 fu modificato l'accesso alla Cappella, che venne collegata direttamente alla chiesa dei Santi Martiri e all'ingresso principale, mediante due gallerie ortogonali, la prima con accesso alla chiesa e alla sagrestia, la seconda solo alla cappella per mezzo di brevi rampe. Nel 1771 la Congregazione aprì una seconda porta, verso la contrada di Dora Grossa, per ottenere un ingresso separato, che fu poi murato e del quale oggi rimane solamente il portale in pietra grigia.
