Etimologicamente il termine deriva dal latino "pulsatus" = "pulsare" in riferimento al caratteristico dondolio dello scapo sotto l'azione del vento. L'epiteto della specie richiama il suo ambiente vegetativo. La peluria argentea della pianta è in grado di creare in cuscinetto d'aria che agisce come isolante. Una leggenda Aostana racconta che i pastori per difendersi dai lupi seminarono intorno al villaggio una pianta cospargendo i semi di peluria, ne nacque una pianta particolarmente pelosa che spaventò i lupi che da allora lasciarono in pace gli animali domestici. Scatto effettuato in Valfurva nel Luglio 2016.
