E' l'arco di trionfo nonché il simbolo del barocco martinese che introduce nel borgo antico. La porta faceva parte dell'antico sistema difensivo medievale, era detta Ianua Antiqua e si trovava spostata poco più a sud. Il suo aspetto era quello di una porta turrificata. L'attuale collocazione fu dovuta alla riedificazione della porta nel XVIII secoloe il nome fu tratto dalla chiesa di fronte, dedicata allora a Santo Stefano. La porta fu costruita grazie al denaro pubblico nel 1764, come riporta chiaramente il cartiglio. Stilisticamente la parte più ricercata è quella della cimasa che è delineata da linee morbide e ondulate. Lateralmente spiccano due fiaccoloni che si sollevano su due serpentine schiacciate. Questo sarà un motivo molto ricorrente nella decorazione barocca di Martina.? In alto alla cimasa curvilinea è collocata la statua di San Martino, patrono della città, in atteggiamento belligerante. La statua celebra, secondo una leggenda, l'apparizione miracolosa del santo sulla cinta muraria, seguito da uno stuolo di cavalieri, quando, il 16 giugno del 1529, fece fuggire i cosiddetti cappelletti, mercenari al soldo di Fabrizio Maramaldo, che assediavano la città da diversi giorni. Secondo la leggenda la città fu salva grazie all'intervento prodigioso di San Martino e di Sant'Antonio da Padova che seguiva da dietro il santo patrono. Negli anni quaranta l'arco fu smontato e rimontato e da allora sulla controfacciata dell'arco che si affaccia in piazza Roma, furono collocate le statue litiche della Madonna con bambino e angeli oranti che di sicuro avevano un'altra collocazione in origine. Oggi la porta è detta anche porta di Sant'Antonio in riferimento alla chiesa di san Antonio che prima era intitolata a Santo Stefano. Sotto l'arco c'è una lapide in ricordo della visita del papa Giovanni Paolo II nel 1989. Critiche e giudizi sempre super graditi. Grazie.
