Sono piante originarie delle zone tropicali e subtropicali del centro e del sud America; alcune del nord America ed altre asiatiche e sono piante di incredibile bellezza che hanno affascinato ed affascinano in ogni luogo e tempo. Questa pianta fu introdotta in Europa nel 1610 da Emmanuel de Villegas, padre agostiniano che rientrava dal Messico. Era rimasto affascinato da una pianta che produceva un fiore straordinario, che gli indigeni chiamavano granadilla e della quale mangiavano il frutto. Il missionario era rimasto colpito, non dal frutto ma dal fiore in quanto ad esso associava la passione e la crocifissione di Gesù Cristo: la corona di filamenti colorati che circonda l'ovario era la corona di spine; i 5 stami, le 5 ferite di Gesù; i 3 stigmi, i 3 chiodi; i 5 petali ed i 5 sepali gli apostoli rimasti fedeli a Gesù; l'androginoforo la colonna della flagellazione ed i viticci i flagelli mentre le 5 antere le 5 ferite. Appena rientrato in patria fece vedere la pianta a padre Giocomo Bosio, e ne fu talmente affascinato che ne parlò nel suo trattato sulla crocifissione di Nostro Signore, con la prima descrizione del fiore che venne chiamato, passione incarnata. Fu però Linneo che nel 1753 classificò questa pianta e mantenne il nome Passiflora che deriva appunto dal latino flos passionis «fiore della passione». Sono state coltivate per tantissimi anni dagli Aztechi e dagli Incas di cui mangiavano i frutti. Sono diventate molto popolari nell'epoca vittoriana nel Regno Unito fino a passare di moda per poi ritornare in voga ai nostri giorni non solo grazie ai tantissimi ibridi che sono stati creati ma anche perchè sono state scoperte diverse proprietà terapeutiche (P. incarnata) soprattutto come sedativo.
