La stazione centrale di Milano ha una particolarità, quella che vediamo oggi in realtà è la "seconda" stazione centrale del capoluogo lombardo. Una prima stazione centrale venne infatti costruita nel 1864, laddove oggi c'è Piazza della Repubblica. Essa fu opera dell' architetto francese Luis Jules Bouchot, divenne la più importante stazione ferroviaria milanese e restò in servizio fino al giugno 1931, quando divenne operativa quella nuova, esistente ancora oggi. Oggi in Piazza della Repubblica non esiste più alcuna traccia di questa stazione centrale, in ogni caso architettonicamente assomigliava agli edifici parigini del XIX secolo. La seconda stazione centrale divenne operativa invece il 30 giugno 1931 ma ha una storia assai più lunga. La prima pietra venne infatti posata dal re Vittorio Emanuele III nel 1906, prima ancora che venisse scelto un progetto! Quindi nel 1912 l'architetto Ulisse Stacchini vinse il concorso per la costruzione. Egli basò il proprio progetto sulla base della stazione di Washington, ma i lavori procedettero molto a rilento. Durante il Ventennio fascista si ebbe una nuova spinta ed il progetto subì lievi modifiche per far apparire la stazione ancor più monumentale in modo da celebrare l'architettura monumentale fascista. il 1° luglio 1931 avvenne finalmente l'inaugurazione ufficiale, dopodiché la stazione è rimasta pressoché simile, salvo lavori di adeguamento ed ammodernamento, come quelli realizzati dal 2005 al 2010. Dopo la ripresa dei lavori, sempre maggiormente appoggiata dall'amministrazione, la stazione venne inaugurata il 1? luglio 1931 dal Ministro delle Comunicazioni Costanzo Cianoe da Monsignor Giacinto Tredici, Vicario generale dell'Arcidiocesi. Mussolini desiderava inaugurarla di persona, ma quando il cardinale Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster, arcivescovo di Milano, decise di non partecipare all'evento per protesta contro le persecuzioni fasciste nei confronti dell'Azione Cattolica, il duce decise di farsi rappresentare dal suo vicario, il ministro delle Comunicazioni. Oggi la stazione conta su 24 binari ed ha un flusso giornaliero di passeggeri di circa 300000 al giorno che possono contare su oltre 500 treni giornalieri, vi si incrociano 7 linee ferroviarie ed ha una funzione di nodo di interscambio fra i sevizi ferroviari e tutti i servizi di trasporto pubblico locale (metropolitana, tram, taxi ed autobus urbani ed extraurbani). L'architettura La facciata della stazione è lunga 200 metri ed ha una volta alta 72 metri. L'iniziale commistione fra stile Liberty ed Art Decò fu travolto dalla suggestiva influenza fascista con i grandi spazi che richiamano le architetture monumentali dell' antica Roma. Per la cronaca: la stazione centrale di Milano è seconda solo alla Termini della capitale per grandezza. Critiche e commenti sempre super graditi. Grazie.
