Nel febbraio del 1530, Monopoli venne conquistata dagli Spagnoli e il re Carlo V, promosse un piano difensivo per difendere la città, visto che sul finire del 1400, una rivolta popolare ne aveva abbattuto il locale castello. Venne approntato, nell'Italia Meridionale, un piano strategico finalizzato alla costruzione di fortezze, in concomitanza del progetto di Pedro Alvarez de Toledo, Viceré di Napoli, il quale nel 1536 diede incarico all'ingegnere Giovanni Maria Buzzocarino di provvedere alle fortificazioni delle città di “Calabria, Terra d'Otranto et Bari et Capitanata”. Nell'ambito di questa politica, nell'ottobre del 1544, don Pedro concesse che la rata del “donativo” di 600.000 ducati, dovuta alla Corona di Spagna dall'Università di Monopoli, fosse stornata per il restauro delle fortificazioni cittadine, praticamente distrutte dal lato terra durante l'assedio del 1529. In un solo anno, pertanto, si procedette all'appalto e al completamento dei lavori di restauro e ristrutturazione dell'intera cinta muraria. Il nuovo sistema di fortificazioni apparve ben progettato e aggiornato sulla base della tecnologie dell'epoca, ma privo, ancora di un castello. Nel1547 vi era solo un “baluardo”, costituito da una torre dell'antica cinta, resti di una torre di epoca romana e del monastero e della chiesa di s. Nicola in Pinna del X secolo. Agglomerato, questo, che costituirà il nucleo dell'attuale Castello. Verso la fine del '500, vennero apportate modifiche all'impianto murario, con l'apertura di una nuova porta (Porta Nuova), e la chiusura dell'antica Porta Concili. A partire dal 1660, infine, sempre per ciò che riguarda le strutture difensive, la cortina della Porta Vecchia venne completamente ristrutturata fino al torrione, eliminando l'ingombrante terrapieno. Oggi ben poco rimane delle mura di cinta di epoca spagnola, rintracciabili tra Cala Porta Vecchia e via Papacenere e san Vito, costeggiando le quali, e passando per Largo s. Salvatore, si arriva ai resti delle mura di santa Maria ed al Castello di Carlo V. Critiche e commenti sempre super graditi. Grazie.
