Il “Bel San Giovanni” di Fassa. La chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, situata nei pressi di Vigo di Fassa, vienje comunemente chiamata il “Bel San Giovanni di Fassa”. Di epoca Longobarda-Carolingica, si sviluppa in forme romaniche (1100). Nel 1489 viene maestosamente ampliato e ristrutturato nel Gotico locale in sorprendente ed esaltante armonia con la natura che lo circonda. L'interno, sontuoso e slanciato, mostra il perfetto equilibrio delle colonne (di Sienite dei Monzoni) aperte a palmizio verso l'alto e fiorenti nell'articolato reticolo delle volte. Nella pala dell'altar maggiore il battesimo di Gesù (Tela di Antonio Longo, 1789). Gli affreschi del Presbiterio (Arte Tedesca 1498) narrano la vita di San Giovanni Battista. Come molte chiese pievane delle Alpi, anche la chiesa di San Giovanni ha mantenuto l'antica tradizione, in tempi antichi (prima dell'Editto di Saint-Cloud Emesso da Napoleone nel 1804) diffusa ovunque, di essere adiacente al cimitero. L'inquadratura non è perfettamente centrata, ma la fretta l'ha fatta da padrona perché, da lì a pochi minuti, sarebbe cominciata la Messa e c'era parecchia gente fuori in attesa di entrare. #Chiese
