I cenotes sono pozzi naturali alimentati da sorgenti sotterranee ( l'antico nome era chen , per cui Chichén Itzá può essere tradotto con “ sul ciglio del pozzo degli Itzá ” ) che oltre a essere preziosi serbatoi d'acqua, erano considerati luoghi sacri . Per onorare gli dei della Pioggia e dell'Acqua nei pozzi venivano gettate offerte di ogni tipo, da statue di legno a gioielli di giada e oro, da animali a esseri umani destinati al sacrificio .
