Le Camelie sono originarie della Cina e del Giappone. Secondo un'antica leggenda orientale, la Camelia è nata a Honsu, un'isola sacra dove viveva Amaterasu, la nipote del sole. In Europa le Camelie arrivarono solo nel XVIII secolo grazie ad un naturalista inglese, James Cunningham, che si trovava in Cina e che spedì a Londra alcune piante. In Cina la pianta della Camelia era chiamata "l'albero dalle foglie lucenti". La Camelia divenne molto popolare quando nel 1848 Alexandre Dumas figlio scrisse il romanzo La signora delle Camelie che ispirò anche La Traviata di Giuseppe Verdi e inoltre la stilista Coco Chanel amò così tanto questo fiore da renderlo leitmotiv nelle sue collezioni e simbolo della Maison nel mondo.
