La più bella di Torino, già piazza d'armi e del mercato, conserva l'aspetto seicentesco di armoniosa uniformità conferitole dall'architetto regio Carlo di Castellamonte (1642-1650). Il lato corto della piazza a sud-ovest è delimitato dalle facciate quasi gemelle delle chiese di Santa Cristina e di San Carlo.
