Nel freddo cielo ancora invernale, dai rami nudi del calicanto si spande nell'aria un profumo soave, come un gentile benvenuto alla nuova stagione che sta per giungere in giardino. Prepariamoci al miracolo che ogni anno si rinnova nei giorni di gennaio e febbraio, quando nell'aria si comincia a percepire una fragranza intensa, dolce con una punta aromatica: arriva da un arbusto apparentemente nudo, con i rami sottili allungati verso il cielo. Solo avvicinandosi i minuscoli fiori risultano chiaramente visibili: simili a campanelle cerose, gialli con una macchia color melograno al centro, a guardarli non sembrerebbero capaci di tanta generosità. E invece sono proprio loro, i fiori profumatissimi del calicanto.
