Meglio noto col nome di ponte Scaligero, il ponte di Castelvecchio è senza dubbio alcuno il monumento civico più audace e mirabile del periodo medioevale veronese; attribuito a tale Guglielmo Bevilacqua, il ponte venne realizzato tra il 1354 e il 1356 per volere dell'allora signore di Verona Cangrande II della Scala. La sua principale funzione, oltre a quella di abbellire ed arricchire la costruenda rocca di Castelvecchio, era, molto più prosaicamente quella di garantire una via di fuga verso il territorio tirolese in caso di sommossa o di complotto di questa o quella fazione avversa all'interno delle mura cittadine. Opera veramente ardita per l'epoca con i suoi 120 metri di lunghezza, il ponte consta di tre arcate aventi luci di 48, 29 e 24 metri: le diverse ampiezze degli archi furono accuratamente e sapientemente studiati in rapporto alle diverse forze dell'acqua in quest'ansa dell'Adige. ...
