Belle, non si può certo dire, ma amanti del bello, questo proprio si. Furono le due "madame reali" Maria Cristina di Borbone, figlia di Enrico IV re di Francia e di Maria de Medici, e Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours, moglie di Carlo Emanuele II, madre di Vittorio Amedeo II, che nell'arco di quasi settant'anni, tra il 1657 e il 1721, trasformarono l'antico castello di Porta Fibellona, sorto come porta fortificata della città in epoca romana e maturato nel medioevo in un fortilizio con quattro torri angolari, una corte e un portico, nella grandiosa, lussuosa e raffinata residenza, impreziosita da una serie di interventi di trasformazioni architettoniche e di soluzioni decorative figlie dell'ispirazione di un barocco aulico, che trova nell'intervento del geniale architetto Filippo Juvarra, con il suo portentoso e suggestivo progetto della facciata e dello scalone monumentale, la degna conferma della sua magnificenza, diventando una delle più significative testimonianze del Barocco europeo. Si deve alle due illustri signore la bellezza di Palazzo Madama, uno degli edifici più rappresentativi della storia millenaria di Torino, che ospitò nella sua famigerata sala del senato i lavori delle Camere all'indomani dell'Unità d'Italia con il conte Camillo Benso di Cavour a tessere le fila della storia, e sede suggestiva del Museo Civico d'Arte Antica dal 1934.
