Dopo che, il 09/11/1989, il muro di Berlino (Berliner Mauer) fu abbattuto, di quella che fu la "più grande opera architettonica" (una lunghezza di 161 Km. per un'altezza di 3,5 mt.) di Berlino si può trovare ormai poco: tra i muri di sbarramento della DDR sono sorti strade, parchi e nuovi quartieri cittadini. I resti, ancora conservati, dell'impianto di confine della DDR non fanno più paura ma devono rimanere come memoria storica per le generazioni future. La "East Side Gallery" si trova in Muhlenstrasse e, oltre ad essere la parte più lunga che rimane del muro, è la più grande galleria di pittura all'aria aperta del mondo. Sulla parte principale, per un chilometro e trecento metri si susseguono i murales di artisti famosi e sconosciuti che, nel 1990, giunsero a Berlino per realizzarla da ben ventuno Paesi. Alcuni disegni hanno avuto anche notorietà mondiale per la loro bellezza o per il loro significato, come il murales della Trabant bianca (più di ogni altra vettura dell' Est, è stata il simbolo della "spaccatura" in due blocchi, occidentale ed orientale, che ha caratterizzato l'Europa fino al 1989) che "sfonda" il muro o quello nel quale Erich Honecker bacia sulla bocca il segretario del PCUS Leonid Breznev. Nella parte posteriore (quella che dà sul parco e, poi, sul fiume) sono invece i visitatori, giovani e meno giovani, che, con più o meno estro, "decorano" il muro lasciando un "segno" del proprio passaggio. Io ho provato a "raccontare", con il mio modestissimo modo di vedere, quello che succede... "dall'altro lato del muro".
