La mitica gara, 1800 km, da Anchorage a Nome, ricorda l'impresa di un gruppo di corrieri su slitte che nel 1925 riuscì a portare il vaccino in tempo a Nome, altrimenti sterminata dalla difterite. A Balto, uno dei cani leader che hanno partecipato all'ultimo tragitto della spedizione, è stata eretta addirittura una statua al Central Park di New York (il cane che condusse il team per la maggior parte del lungo tragitto si chiamava invece Togo) .
