Prima che Mussolini facesse bonificare la pianura pontina, l'area umida che circondava il monte Circeo era straordinaria e abitata da popolazioni numerosissime di uccelli palustri e mammiferi, tra cui la più importante popolazione italiana di lontre. Purtroppo con lo sviluppo economico molti di questi tesori naturali sono stati moilto degradati.
