I cervi, che per loro natura sono dei fantasmi (eccezion fatta per la stagione del bramito), diventano ancor più elusivi nel periodo della ricrescita del palco, quando si spostano lungo le scoscese e praticamente irraggiungibili pareti esposte a nord e nel silenzio rotto solo dai ruscelli della neve in disgelo, passano le giornate a ruminare ed a ristabilire le gerarchie. Ci sono però dei momenti in cui si spingono oltre il bosco, nella ampie e ripide praterie assolate, rassicurati dal branco, per godere dell'erba migliore. Dopo diverse estenuanti uscite, sono riusciuto a intuire quale fosse il loro passaggio preferito per riapprocciarsi al bosco, a quota 2200 metri. Una mattina ancora buia, salendo nel groviglio di larici e ontani ancora innevati, sono arrivato nel punto in cui mi aspettavo che sarebbero sbucati per rientrare nel fitto, e dopo un'attesa particolarmente lunga, nel sole ormai alto della tarda mattinata, eccolo: un giovane cervo, ancora poco regale ma dall'eleganza quasi femminile, si affaccia proprio davanti a me. Nonostante io sia ben nascosto ed in ombra, intuisce la mia presenza, lancia un cupo, inquietante messaggio gutturale di allarme e fa dietrofront. Mi muovo velocemente nel punto esatto in cui è sparito: una ventina di cervi è ormai lontana, tra valloncelli successivi vedo i loro posteriori apparire e sparire prima di perdersi completamente...
