Gigante cilindrico di ferro di quasi 90 metri di altezza e 63 di diametro, con oltre 1.500 pali infissi che, messi in fila, raggiungerebbero una lunghezza complessiva di 36 chilometri. All'interno aveva un enorme cilindro che si gonfiava e sgonfiava mostrando la quantita' di gas contenuta che veniva poi utilizzata sia per l'illuminazione pubblica, sia per usi domestici. Utilizzato come sfondo cinematografico da Pasolini per "Accattone" (1961) a Verdone in "Troppo forte" (1986), da Özpetek per "Le fate ignoranti" (2001) a Placido in "Romanzo Criminale" (2005). Nel 2023 e' stato scelto come location dalla rock band Maneskin per il video del singolo "Honey" (nel 2004 invece era stato l'oggetto della tesi in architettura di Claudio Baglioni). I gazometri di via Ostiense non sono stati i primi della citta', ne esistevano gia' altri due: uno in via dei Cerchi, all'interno del Circo Massimo, inaugurato nel 1853 come prima officina del Gas di Roma, fu smantellato nel 1934 per la costruzione della nuova via del Circo Massimo, dopo essere stato disattivato nel 1910 con l'entrata in funzione dei tre gazometri minori nella zona Ostiense. L'altro, vicino piazza del Popolo, nell'area compresa tra via Flaminia 133 e l'attuale Lungotevere delle Navi, fu costruito nel 1871 per servire la zona Nord della capitale.
