Proprio sotto il paese di Nonza si trova la vasta cosiddetta “spiaggia nera“, famosa per la suggestiva sabbia scura che le da il nome, con tonalità cromatiche che vanno dal nero a vari tipi di grigio scuro, con granelli luccicanti, composta da piccoli ciottoli grigi che diventano neri quando sono bagnati. Ha un impatto visivo sicuramente affascinante, il quale non ci deve però far scordare come la sabbia nera di Nonza, che l’estate accumula così tanto calore da divenire rovente nelle ore più calde, finirono per mescolarsi, a metà del XX secolo, con gli scarti di lavorazione d’una vicina miniera di amianto chiusa nel 1966, che ne ingrandirono l’arenile. La spiaggia fu infatti interdetta per molti anni. Studi eseguiti successivamente hanno evidenziato l’abbondante presenza del pericoloso minerale, anche se non in fibre ritenute pericolose per la salute perché il mare avrebbe da tempo asportato i filamenti potenzialmente dannosi.
