L'airone rosso è un migratore che frequenta le zone umide e i canneti fitti, dove si mimetizza perfettamente grazie alla sua colorazione. Durante il periodo riproduttivo, il piumaggio assume intense sfumature rosso-porpora. È un predatore solitario e molto timoroso. Caccia restando immobile nell'acqua bassa, catturando pesci, anfibi e insetti con scatti fulminei del becco aguzzo. In Italia nidifica principalmente tra l'Emilia-Romagna, il Veneto, la Lombardia, il Piemonte e in Sardegna. Sverna nell'Africa sub-sahariana. Costruisce il nido intrecciando canne e rametti a pelo d'acqua, deponendo solitamente 4-5 uova tra aprile e maggio.
