La leggenda narra che intorno al 1488 un uomo affetto da un male incurabile avesse fatto voto ad un’immagine della Madonna con Bambino dipinta su un muro che se fosse guarito avrebbe tenuto una lampada sempre accesa dinanzi alla Madonna. L’uomo guarì e, oltre a mantenere la promessa fatta, fece erigere anche una piccola cappella grazie all’aiuto economico delle corporazioni di arti e mestieri chiamate Università (dei Pizzicaroli, Vignaroli, Ortolani, Fruttaroli, Scarpinelli (ovvero i ciabattini) o Pollaroli). I lavori per la costruzione della nuova chiesa iniziarono già nel 1494 ma languirono, per scarsità di fondi, fino al 1513: ripresi nel 1523, fu solo dal 1585. Inizialmente previsto a pianta centrale, il progetto fu trasformato a pianta longitudinale da Guidetto Guidetti, l’architetto allievo di Michelangelo Buonarroti....
