La Basilica di San Saba fu fondata nel VIII secolo su un oratorio eretto in epoca romana e dedicato a Santa Silvia, madre del papa Gregorio Magno. Originariamente questo sito ospitava un monastero greco fondato da monaci provenienti dalla Palestina, seguaci di San Saba Archimandrita, da cui la chiesa prende il nome.
